Friction nanogenerators use breathing to drive cardiac pacemakers for the first time

"Life is endless, energy is not limited"

Implantable medical devices, such as cardiac pacemakers, play an important role in today's clinical medicine field, which greatly improves the patient's symptoms and quality of life, with significant social and economic value. As an emerging medical device development direction, there are still many problems in implantable medical devices that need to be broken.

The first is the issue of long-term energy supply. At this stage, implantable devices mainly rely on battery power, and the working life is limited. Once the battery is exhausted, the patient has to face a huge surgical risk and economic burden again. Therefore, the development of a long-lasting in-vivo energy supply system is of great significance for the development of implantable medical devices.

Recently, the research team led by Academician Wang Zhonglin and Associate Professor Li Zhou of the Beijing Institute of Nano-Energy and Systems, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made progress in the development of long-term energy systems for implantable medical devices. Dr. Zheng Qiang, Ph.D. student Shi Bojun and assistant researcher Fan Fengru jointly developed an implantable self-driven energy system.

The system consists of an implantable friction nanogenerator and an energy conversion storage device that collects the energy generated by the breath to drive the pacemaker into a "battery" that is continuously powered.

The size of the friction nanogenerator is only 12 mm x 12 mm x 0.7 mm, which is about the same size as the fingernail. The research team implanted the self-driven energy system into the rat, successfully collected and transformed the energy generated by multiple respiratory movements of the rat, stored it in the form of electrical energy, and was able to drive an external cardiac pacemaker prototype. Work to produce the same electrical impulses as a medical pacemaker.

According to theoretical calculations, the rat can successfully drive the pacemaker 1 time per breath by the energy collected by the implantable friction nanogenerator. If the human body is used, the pacemaker can be continuously driven by breathing alone to make it work properly.

This energy-based system based on the body's own energy in vivo transformation will greatly improve the energy supply of existing batteries and prolong the service life of implantable medical devices, and has broad application prospects in the field of implantable medicine. With the further optimization and improvement of the implantable self-driven energy system, it is expected that in the future, "life will continue, energy supply will not stop", and bring the gospel to the majority of critically ill patients.
