The Human Brain Program (HBP) will follow the opinions of critics, reviewers, and mediators. Recently, at a meeting in Paris, France, the council of the €1 billion project approved a series of reform proposals put forward by the mediation committee, which will reform HBP's management and research plans.
This criticized project welcomes change. “We are very pleased that the Board can adopt these recommendations,†said Peter Dayan, a neuroscientist at the University of London School of the United Kingdom. Last year, he and hundreds of researchers published an open letter requesting reform of HBP.
The report acknowledges that the current criticism of HBP is correct. The report mentioned that the committee “mainly supported and emphasized some criticisms of the scientific community on the purpose, scientific methods, management and management issues of the projectâ€.
The Mediation Committee stated that HBP, currently managed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), should be operated by a new international entity. A news bulletin issued by HBP stated: “In the first solid step towards this goal, the Board established a Management Committee composed of former and current international scientific organizations.†(They include the European Nuclear Research Institute.) Center, European Space Agency and European Molecular Biology Laboratory.)
The committee also made recommendations on how to better focus on HBP science project priorities and adopt more transparent management to reduce conflicts of interest, and it mentioned that a sub-project of cognitive neurology should actually be strengthened. The President of the Board, EPFL Provost Philippe Gillet, stated that HBP “unanimously†agreed to these recommendations.
Gillet said that there was "no tension" at the board meeting. “Everything went smoothly.†Gillet stressed that it is not unusual for a large project to be transformed during the course of its progress. HBP has already begun reforms. "These suggestions are very useful to us," he said.
“Slightly annoying.†One of the project’s most radical critics, Portuguese neuroscientist Zachary Mainen, said, “They are trying to minimize the impact of a harshly worded report. Of course they admit that they made mistakes and will take Very different routes are good."
Although Mainen is happy with the results, he also said that the question is how the reform will proceed. "We will know if they really take this matter seriously."
