AIDS patients are prone to vitamin D deficiency

Recently, there have been many studies on vitamin D, which has caused people to pay attention to this trace element. AIDS has always been a medical problem that people are paying attention to. Recently, there have been new developments on the Lost Malaysia Airlines. Many experts and scholars who have contributed to AIDS, regardless of the outcome, are a major loss of human AIDS treatment. Whether AIDS patients are prone to vitamin D deficiency is discussed in scholars' research.

According to the UNAIDS (UNAIDS), about 35 million people lived in an HIV-infected environment in 2013, 2.1 million people were infected with the virus, and 1.5 million people died of AIDS. Brazilian scholars mentioned In Brazil, 718,000 people live in the environment with the virus, with a prevalence of about 0.4%, but only 574,000 people have been treated. In 2012, about 313,000 people were treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART). The rate of HIV infection is only 44%. After adopting ART, the number of new infections, the incidence of opportunistic infections and the mortality rate of AIDS patients have been greatly reduced.

As a result, research has turned to people's health issues in AIDS settings, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, acute myocardial infarction, and heart failure. In addition, the problem of vitamin D deficiency is also involved. Vitamin D is a derivative steroid, a fat-soluble vitamin, and is involved in the mediation of immune responses. In people infected with HIV, especially in the later stages of infection, vitamin D deficiency is more often diagnosed than in the general population.

Researchers such as Melissa Soares Medeiros of Brazil conducted this study to determine the profile of vitamin D deficiency in HIV-infected patients and their association with immunovirology, sociodemographic data, and patient comorbidities. The research press should publish this article in the December 2014 issue of the journal World Journal of AIDS. The study included 78 patients, and the average age of 42 men (53.8%) was 45.7 ± 11.03 years.

In this retrospective observational study, patients were diagnosed with HIV infection, and data collection included sociodemographic, immunovirology, antiretroviral therapy, blood glucose, vitamin D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), and alkaline phosphatase ( ALP) and information on related complications.

In patients with high ALP levels, 45.7% CD4 counts < 500 cels/mm3, whereas in ALP normal group, only 22.2%, and in patients with high PTH, 81.9% increased ALP levels. Therefore, less CD4 counts are associated with hyperparathyroidism and are also associated with vitamin D deficiency.

In the study, there was no gender-related change in vitamin D or hyperparathyroidism, and parathyroid hormone in HIV patients showed secondary hyperparathyroidism, reducing the impact of vitamin D deficiency. , suggesting that HIV infection is more relevant than sex hormones.

Although vitamin D can be obtained from diets and dietary supplements, it is mainly caused by the sun's ultraviolet B radiation that affects the skin. In the study area, the average annual temperature changes from 24 ° C to 29 ° C. Although the weather conditions are conducive to the production of vitamin D, the lack of hygiene D in HIV patients in this area is more serious than in other areas.

This study demonstrates that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in northeastern Brazil and has little to do with sun exposure, but is associated with HIV infection. Deficiency was also detected to be associated with persistent inflammation and low CD4 counts. Therefore, scholars suggest that the improvement of vitamin D content should continue to follow up, to strengthen the CD4 count control in this population to avoid bone and joint complications in the future HIV treatment.
