According to a recent article published by the American Overseas Chinese News Network, a new study warned that even a night of insomnia may fill the brain with protein blocks associated with Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers found that people with insufficient sleep had a significant increase in β-amyloid amyloid overnight, and that this substance formed plaques that interfered with brain function between neurons.
According to Shokri Kojori, a researcher at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, according to the study, he believes that even a night of insomnia can cause the brain to be filled with harmful beta-amyloid compounds. He said, "I think this assumption is very logical, and it is consistent with previous research conclusions."
The researchers pointed out in the background data that previous mouse and human studies found a potential link between sleep deprivation and accumulation of amyloid beta protein in the brain. However, many studies rely on self-reported sleep quality records.
So Shokri Kojori and his team decided to create a new way of experimenting to more accurately detect the effects of insomnia on human beta-amyloid levels.
They recruited 20 healthy people who had no history of brain disease and let them stay in the lab for two nights, one group can rest at night and the other group not sleep at night. Two mornings later, participants underwent brain scans to assess their beta-amyloid levels.
The researchers found that β-amyloid was significantly increased in the brains of people with sleep deprivation compared with those who had a good sleep. In addition, an increase in β-amyloid was observed in important memory areas in their brains.
Experts believe that each neuron contributes to the production of β-amyloid in the brain. When people do not sleep, their neurons will continue to work, which may lead to more β-amyloid.
At the same time, insomnia can also make brain waste, including beta-amyloid, difficult to remove, because during sleep, neuronal cells shrink, making brain waste easier to remove from the brain.
Experts also pointed out that more research is needed to prove that there is a direct link between sleep deprivation and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Shokri Kojori pointed out that a future experiment may allow participants to experience a night of insomnia, then sleep well for a night, and then scan the brain to prove whether sleep can restore brain health.
In addition, researchers need to demonstrate whether sustained high levels of beta-amyloid in the brain increase the chance of plaque formation between neurons.
The study was published in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
