When children can eat salty (0-1 years old)

Salt is a very important condiment, and it is difficult to cause people's appetite for "bland and odorless" foods. Salt's chemical composition is sodium chloride, chlorine and sodium are all necessary for the human body. More than 90% of sodium chloride in the body is excreted from the urine, and a small amount is discharged from sweat salts. The discharge and intake of sodium chloride in healthy children are basically the same.

Due to different living habits, people's tastes are also very different. People in the south like to eat sweets, northerners like to eat spicy foods, pregnant women like to eat sour food, and old people like to eat salty food... In general, the average family does The dishes are often salty and light in terms of adult taste. However, this is not suitable for children.

Kidney function below 6 months is not perfect, and the concentration function is poor. Therefore, the salt content in the urine is less, the urine volume is high and the proportion is low; by the age of 1 year, the kidney concentration function can catch up with the adult level. Since regular dairy products or soymilk all contain certain amounts of sodium (more sodium in milk than breast milk), infants under 6 months do not normally need additional salt supplements, except for diarrhea and vomiting.

Children 6 months later, breastmilk or other milk alone can no longer meet the needs of the body's growth and development. At this time, supplementary foods must be gradually added. According to our country's traditional habits, the added paste-like supplementary foods (such as milk cakes, nutritious rice flour, etc.) are mostly made from sugar, but this is not good for children's health. This is because starch or sugar cannot be converted into protein in the body and the excess can only be stored as fat. Therefore, although these children are fat (fat accumulation), muscles are loose and have poor resistance. Lack of protein and edema. Eating sweet foods for a long period of time can also cause certain nutritional deficiencies due to the monotony of recipes. In fact, at this time, the kidney function of the child has gradually improved, and on the basis of starchy foods, various animal foods such as egg yolk, fish paste, minced meat, liver paste, and vegetable paste and other supplementary foods should be added. Usually, these supplementary foods are made into a salty taste, which can stimulate the appetite of children, and the diversity of food sources also avoids the imbalance of nutrients.

However, parents should pay attention to the fact that the salt content in foods is only slightly salty. The total amount added daily should not exceed 4 grams. Adult taste should not be used as the standard (general daily intake of salt is 8- 12g). Excessive intake of salt can increase the burden on the kidneys, and it can cause edema when the weight is too high. The reason is that too much sodium will “catch up” potassium in the body and cause low potassium levels. Since potassium is an element that is required for myocardial relaxation, the loss of potassium can lead to weakened heart muscle and sudden death. In addition, the habit of “heavy taste” has been cultivated since childhood, and many children will develop obesity, high blood pressure, and stroke prematurely when they become adults.

Therefore, children should add salty food after 6 months, but the amount should not be too much.
