The relevant research results were published in the international academic journal Cancer Research.
Researchers say that since the mid-1970s, the incidence of liver cancer in the United States has increased, and the prognosis of liver cancer patients is particularly severe. Considering that the incidence of obesity in the United States is also increasing, they studied whether obesity and type 2 diabetes are associated with liver cancer risk. The data were from 14 different studies conducted in adults in the United States.
The 1.57 million American adults who participated in the 14 different studies responded to questions about height, weight, alcohol and smoking, and other possible cancer risk factors. Participants did not have cancer at the time of the study, 6.5% of the participants had type 2 diabetes, and 2,162 participants subsequently developed liver cancer and were confirmed by the researchers.
The researchers compared the incidence of liver cancer in obese and diabetic patients and health groups, and wanted to identify the relevant risk factors that affect liver cancer. The results showed that for every 5 kg/m2 increase in BMI, the risk of developing liver cancer in men and women increased by 38% and 25%, respectively; for every 5 cm increase in waist circumference, the risk of liver cancer increased by 8%. After correcting alcohol, smoking, race, and BMI, patients with type 2 diabetes were 2.61 times more likely to develop liver cancer than non-diabetic individuals, and the risk increased with increasing BMI.
The researchers said that the three factors of BMI, waist circumference and type 2 diabetes have a very significant correlation with the risk of liver cancer, which further indicates that liver cancer is a member of the list of obesity-related cancers. The study also suggests that people should pay more attention to fighting obesity.
