The tumor "smashed" most of the left scapula, and the doctor succeeded in using 3D technology to print a new titanium metal left shoulder blade (pictured), completing the world's second case, the first 3D printing scapula reconstruction in Central China. .
Mr. Yao of Wuchang is 53 years old. From February onwards, he felt pain in his shoulders and shoulders from time to time. He did not care at first. In the middle of last month, Mr. Yao was unbearable and went to the Central South Hospital of Wuhan University. MRI detected the left scapula tumor. Although it was a benign tumor, the diameter of the tumor was 10 cm, and the scapula was removed from the left side. Must be surgically removed.
After surgical removal of the scapula, if there is no reconstruction surgery, the muscles have no attachment points. Mr. Yao's left arm activity will be greatly affected, but the human shoulder blade is irregular and reconstruction is very difficult. The doctor decided to keep a small amount of the shoulder blade that was connected to the shoulder joint and was not invaded by the tumor. The rest was reconstructed with 3D printing technology, retaining the function of arm movement.
At the beginning of this month, the doctor used the shape of the right scapula of Mr. Yao to print the artificial prosthesis of the defect in 3D with titanium material. Then he took 2 hours to successfully perform the tumor resection and successfully implanted part of the printed scapula. Mr. Yao was discharged from the hospital on December 6. Yesterday, he went to the hospital to remove the suture. The review showed that the implanted prosthesis was completely consistent with the retained scapula and the joint function was basically restored.
Yu Li, deputy director of the Department of Trauma and Orthopaedics of the hospital, said that in recent years, 3D printing manual custom surgery has been carried out in many hospitals in China, but there are not many digital prosthesis directly printed by metal 3D printing technology. Custom joints typically take 2 weeks from drawing to casting, while 3D printing with metallic materials takes only 1 day, saving patient hospital time and costs.
